McIlroy still needed to beat Mahan to take the number one spot

Nobody can say he had an easy path to the trophy last week. He beat three of his cup team-mates in Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar, former USPGA champion YE Yang, Wilson and then McIlroy.

And he said afterwards: "It feels good. I didn't realise how difficult it is to win this week because it is six matches and you're playing against the best Callaway RAZR Hawk  Driver players in the world."

And he believes McIlroy is destined to top the rankings sooner or later, and joked: "Deep down I wanted to postpone that crowning of the number one player in the world for Rory.

"He'll get there. He's phenomenal, he's really talented. He'll be number one eventually."

Westwood said after his Callaway Razr X Tour irons semi-final loss: "I think we both played well - it was just one of those typical match play games that went a lot with momentum."

He considered the long 11th critical. The Ulsterman's wild second shot was heading for the desert and possibly out of bounds, but hit a cart path and finished on grass near the green. It was halved in birdies.

"That sort of thing can change a match," said Westwood. "Go back to level there, it's a different kettle of fish. I thought it was big turning point.

"But I'm playing great. I've shot four or five under every discount golf clubs day and that's pretty good golf."

Westwood still earned almost 309,000 pounds for fourth, while McIlroy went away with 535,000 pounds.

Tiger is working for better scores

Still, Tiger succeeds despite his errant shots and shaky putting. He never gives up. His opponent Wednesday found out that lesson. But is Tiger's will enough to sustain him for five more matches? Doesn't he have to show some consistency to really make it right through on the finals?

Things were completely different in the life the last time he won the Match Play, in 2008. Later that year, he won the U.S. Open on a single leg with Hank Haney as his coach and Steve Williams as his caddie. Elin Nordegren used to be his wife. He made putts from TaylorMade Ghost TM-110 Tour Putter  everywhere at Torrey Pines. His swing was flawed but he won 4 times in a season shortened by his tattered left leg.

Four years later, he's divorced once you get your coach (Sean Foley) along with a new caddie (Joe LaCava). And he's obsessive about his golf swing and putting. Every competitive round he plays is seemingly a battle between the old and new swing, between your old and new Tiger.

What a catchy and memorable line that holds some truth for Tiger's place right now hanging around. Fernandez-Castano knew he was facing a fallen giant and the man allow him to off the hook.

"I mean, if there is 1 day to overpower Padraig harrington, this is it," he was quoted saying as soon as the match. "I had my chances, and i also didn't take them. And you also can't do this and among the best ever."

Still, Tiger succeeds despite his errant shots Ping K15 Driver and shaky putting. He never surrenders. His opponent Wednesday learned that lesson. But is Tiger's will enough to sustain him for five more matches? Doesn't he have to show some consistency to restore throughout towards the finals?

Bradley had the best look at birdie with a 15-footer

Mickelson and Bradley each came up short, a horrible angle. Mickelson's flop shot landed near the hole and rolled into the back bunker. Bradley was in the bunker, and did well to blast out to 15 feet, just through the green.

Haas ended the suspense with his putt.

Bradley, who closed with a 71, missed his birdie putt after taylormade burner superfast 2.0 fairway wood Mickelson, who also had a 71, failed to hole his bunker shot.

``I didn't think he was going to make that one,'' Bradley said. ``I should have known, though, because he's a great putter and a great player.''

Haas, the FedEx Cup champion, captured his fourth career PGA Tour title and moved to No. 12 in the world.

Mickelson, who rallied from six discount golf clubs shots behind with a 64 to win last week at Pebble Beach, was trying to become the first player since Tiger Woods in August 2009 to win back-to-back on the PGA Tour.

Mickelson missed three straight putts from just inside 10 feet on the back nine - two for par, one for birdie - but atoned for it with his birdie on the 18th, the longest putt he made all day.

Bradley also missed a pair of putts from inside 10 feet down the stretch until coming up big on the 18th.

Mickelson seized control early with the best shot he hit all week. With pin tucked in the back right corner on a new green at the fifth hole - a deep swale behind it and to the TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter right - Mickelson hooked a 9-iron that started out toward the gallery and wound up 4 feet away for birdie.

That put him at 9 under, two shots clear of Haas, who had birdied the par-3 sixth two groups ahead. Jonathan Byrd, who had been tied for the lead, made double bogey on No. 5 with a hooked tee shot into the hay.

Donald’s father is proud of him

His father rarely visited golf tournaments. He was happy with his son more being a person than just a golfer. The past 2 yrs have been a struggle, as his father went from double knee replacement with an addiction to pain killers, then bouts of depression.

One moment stands out for Donald, and the man wasn't even there.

He was at Wentworth, fighting a flawed swing to be TaylorMade Ghost TM-110 Tour Putter  the hunt for a specified duration to find yourself in a playoff with Lee Westwood, beat him around the first extra hole and replace him as No. One in the globe.

Donald's brother, Christian, was home that weekend using their father, watching it unfold in the news.

``He looked in Chris' eye, also it would have been a proud moment,'' Donald said. ``He's for ages been proud and supportive, more pleased callaway x22 irons with the person I converted into.''

Donald opened his season in Abu Dhabi having a tie for 48th, initially since August he failed to finish among the top 12. That's still better than missing the cut, because he did with the Northern Trust Open this past year.

Riviera is the place Donald comes full circle.

He leads an area on the Northern Trust Open that has two-time winner Phil Mickelson, coming off his six-shot comeback to win yesterday at Pebble Beach; some discount golf clubs Aussies in Jason Day and Adam Scott, who are playing the PGA Tour the very first time this season; and Padraig Harrington, who did start to show some long lost form at Pebble Beach.

Korda made her birdie putt in the second group on the second playoff hole

``I was really calm,'' Korda said. ``I knew what the putt did because I'd had it before and it did not move. I was a little higher up and more to the right. I knew the line and I knew the speed. All I had to do was just hit it. It started breaking. I thought, `Oh, my goodness no, don't lip out, don't break too early.' I don't even know what side of the hole it hit. I was overwhelmed by everything.''

Making her 16th start as an LPGA discount golf clubs Tour member, Korda began the round with a one-stroke lead and was two ahead at 7 under after birdieing three of the first eight holes.

``I thought, `You've got to be kidding me,''' Korda said about the bogey run. ``I was lipping out and not reading my putts correctly. But I thought, `Come on, you can still get it back.' ... I was walking down the fairway like an absolute goof. After I made the birdie, I was OK, like, `I can do this.'''

Projected to jump from callaway diablo edge irons to 30th in the world ranking, she became the sixth youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and the fourth youngest to win a 72-hole event.

``All the times, I was down last year, it is all worth it,'' she said. ``It made me grow up. It made me realize that you've got to change your life to live out here and this is proof. I know that all the hard hours I put in and will keep putting in are really worth it. Every moment.''

Top-ranked Yani Tseng, the winner the last two years at Commonwealth Golf Club, was 1 under after a 74. The Taiwanese star had a three-hole stretch Friday in her second-round 76 Ping Anser Forged Irons when she dropped six strokes with a quadruple-bogey 8 and two bogeys. On Sunday, she had a triple bogey on the par-4 fourth, and bogeyed 15 and 16.

``If I didn't have the two bogeys late, I probably still would have had a chance,'' Tseng said. ``So it's good that I hung in there and fought back.''

Pettersen and Tseng will tee off in the Women’s Australian Open

Pettersen, who may have been No. 2 to Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa and after this Tseng, says she's what can be done to assume the very best ranking.

It‘s for ages been a dream of mine, she said. And I definitely think my game will there be.

Yani’s got an incredible jump start over-all individuals and it’s likely to take greater than a season to catch with her.

Tseng has demonstrated off her new, more Mizuno MP-59 Irons powerful swing at Royal Melbourne, honing the tweaks to her technique as she familiarized herself while using sandbelt course.

Tseng started 2011 which has a title in the Women‘s Australian Open and went on to win a total of 12 tournaments, including two majors and seven on the LPGA Tour to finish a long way clear atop the rankings.

The 23-year-old Taiwanese started getting ready for the 2012 Australian tournament?awhich kicks off a three-week Asian swing before the LPGA Tour moves to U.S. soil next month in Arizona?aby watching the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne‘s Composite course last November.

Pettersen said she tried to ignore Tseng’s approach, preferring to target her own game.

I take a look at my game and a few things i are capable of doing preferable to get the most from the jawhorse every day, she said. She’s an excellent No. 1, she‘s very aggressive, very fearless and obviously has a lot of confidence right now. But I‘ve beaten her discount golf clubs before so I know you can accomplish it.

Pettersen is looking for consistency, transferring her good form for the tour to major titles.

I think back at 2011 as a great year, she said. I had three wins, there is plenty of consistent golf but I wasn’t really in contention to the majors, which was a little painful.

That‘s one thing I must do, make an effort to prepare better within the weeks prior to the majors so i could go ahead less stressed about how exactly the game is feeling.

Pettersen also paid close attention to the Titleist 910 D3 Driver Presidents Cup in readiness with this week?¡¥s tournament, noting the amount of balls that sped through the glassy greens.

I may play a bit more conservatively. You have to take just what the course gives you each day. It can swap around effortlessly and change drastically from morning to afternoon, she said.
